Steps to Clean Up After a Commercial Renovation

8/16/2022 (Permalink)

When your commercial property undergoes a renovation the clean-up can seem like an afterthought. SERVPRO of North Tempe has provided steps to ensure your property is cleaned properly:

Clean-up Steps

Usually, a post-construction clean-up will include the following:

  • Sweep and vacuum all surfaces, including ceilings and walls
  • Sweep, mop, and disinfect floors
  • Vacuum all upholstery
  • Wipe down doors, knobs, baseboards, moldings, and hardware
  • Thorough wipe-down and sanitization of bathrooms and kitchens (including appliances, cabinets, and counters)
  • Dust, vacuum, and wipe down all window interiors including sills and frames
  • Dust all ducts, grates, vents, blinds, ceiling fans, and lighting fixtures
  • Clean all hardware such as hinges and handles
  • Clean inside and outside of shelves and cabinets
  • Clean inside all closets
  • Removal of all remaining trash and debris (although your contractor should have removed most of this as part of the contract)

If you’re trying to decide whether to do it yourself or to outsource it to the experts, ask the following questions:

  • Do you have the energy and time?
  • How long will it take you?
  • Do you have any money left in the renovation budget you could put toward the cleaning? (Or better yet, build it in now if you haven’t started!)

Different circumstances will determine who gets the job, but a thorough clean is crucial. All kinds of particles are released into the air during renovations, including various toxins, mold spores, silicates, and ultra-fine dust that can damage your lungs. Freshly applied paints, lacquers, and primers also give off fumes. Given the possible dangers to your health, the hefty price tag for a proper clean may well be worth it! If you are looking for experts in cleaning your commercial property call SERVPRO of North Tempe at 480-456-0000.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/2/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of North Tempe will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We treat our customers with empathy, respect, and your property with care.

How To Clean Sewage Backup in Your Home

7/22/2022 (Permalink)

A sewer backup can lead to the spread of bacteria and viruses in your home. The problem should be addressed as soon as possible.

There are some steps you can take to limit the spread of the contamination. They include:

  • Turning off running water
  • Move un-contaminated objects to dry, clean areas
  • Open windows and doors to speed up the drying process and limit the growth of mold
  • Discard contaminated curtains, carpeting, and upholstered furniture

Tips for Cleaning Sewage Backup in Your Bathtub

If you see a small bathtub backup, you may be able to clean the spill yourself. Before you start, make sure you have the necessary equipment. Wear protective equipment like goggles, coveralls, rubber gloves, and boots. Do not let your bare skin touch the sewage. You should also avoid touching your nose, ears, eyes, or any open cuts.

Once you are properly protected from the sewer backup, and after the contaminated items have been taken out of the bathroom, you can start removing the standing water. Discard any solid waste and apply an initial disinfectant spray to the affected area. You should then clean all the surfaces with household detergent to remove any additional dirt and contamination. Next, dry the area with a combination of dehumidifiers and portable fans. Finally, disinfect the area a second time by using bacteria-killing bleach.

When To Call an Expert

If the contaminated area is large, you should contact a professional cleanup company, like SERVPRO of North Tempe. Experts should also be brought in if your home’s HVAC system has been contaminated, or if the sewage has been in place for more than 24 hours.

While you may be able to handle a small sewer backup on your own, emergency restoration specialists will know how to clean up a bigger area quickly and safely. SERVPRO of North Tempe can also dry any belongings that were damaged by the flooding.

To recap you should contact a service professional unless the spill is limited to a tiny section of your bathroom floor, if an entire area or HVAC system is contaminated call SERVPRO of North Tempe at (480) 456-0000.

Does Your Home Have A Mold Problem?

7/6/2022 (Permalink)

Mold Spores Mold Spores

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call SERVPRO® of North Tempe Today (480) 456-0000.

Water Damage from Leaking Windows in Tempe Business?

6/21/2022 (Permalink)

A commercial building with water damage is shown. We restore water damage 24-hours a day in Maricopa County!

Our North Tempe, Mesa Central, and Paradise Valley team has been restoring water damage for commercial properties and homes for many years. With the onset of the Monsoon Season, it is a good idea to check the windows and doors of your property to make sure there is no damage to the windows and door seals. Any cracks or gaps in the seals can allow moisture and water to seep into the structure. Make sure to make repairs as needed to discourage water intrusion issues.

Water is invasive and can seep into and under anything in its path. This water damage timeline illustrates the damage water can do in a short period:

Within Minutes

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path
  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain
  • A musty odor appears

Storm-Damaged Businesses in North Tempe?

5/9/2022 (Permalink)

Heavy rain is falling. We restore storm-damaged buildings in Maricopa County.

The beginning of March brought unexpected and welcomed rain and hail to Tempe and other parts of Southern Arizona. Our North Tempe, Mesa Central, and Paradise Valley teams responded to several storm damage emergencies in the Tempe area involving roof leaks and other forms of water intrusion. Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute for preventing storm damage:

Exterior Inspection and Repair

Water can be prevented from entering a structure’s exterior through routine inspection and maintenance and making repairs as needed.

  • Caulk and seal windows
  • Inspect the roof for missing and aging shingles
  • Check rain gutters and drainage systems and remove any debris
  • Check downspouts and clear any clogs and make sure they are draining away from the structure
  • Check sprinkler systems and make sure the sprinklers are not spraying water onto the structure and that water is not pooling around the structure’s foundation
    • Make sure water drains away from the building.Water is invasive and will quickly find its way into a structure when water is allowed to pool around the foundation. After a storm, or when the ground is saturated by rainwater, the water may enter the foundation wall through any cracks.

"Haboob" Dust Storm Sweeps Across Paradise Valley?

4/13/2022 (Permalink)

A dust storm sweeps across the Arizona landscape. We clean and restore properties damaged by haboobs in Maricopa County.

Our team in North Tempe, Mesa Central, and Paradise Valley restores storm-damaged properties in Paradise Valley each year. According to The Arizona Emergency Network (AEN), strong winds produced by thunderstorms can blow loose sand and dirt from the ground, causing these large walls of dust and debris, or dust storms. These dust storms, or "haboobs," are unexpected and can happen any time of the year in Arizona. These haboobs can be miles long and thousands of feet high. Dust storms can reduce visibility to near zero in seconds, often causing deadly car crashes.

The AEN urges residents to become familiar with these terms to help identify a dust storm hazard:

Dust Storm Watch

This tells you when and where dust storms are likely to occur. Watch the sky and stay tuned to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for information.

Dust Storm Warning

It is issued when visibility is 1/2 mile or less due to blowing dust or sand and wind speeds of 30 miles an hour or more.

A family is reviewing their escape plan. We restore commercial property damage in Maricopa County.

Do you have an escape plan for your household? Our local team in North Tempe, Mesa Central, and Paradise Valley responds to fire damage emergencies throughout the year in Paradise Valley and offer these tips for escape planning from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Draw a map of your home showing all doors and windows. Discuss the plan with everyone in your home.
  • Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily.
  • Have an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or a mailbox) a safe distance away from the home where everyone can meet
  • Practice your home fire drill at night and during the day with everyone in your home, twice a year
  • Practice using different ways out
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them
  • Close doors behind you as you leave as a closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire
  • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area
  • Install alarms on every level of the home
  • Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan of their home, marking two ways out of each room, including windows and doors

Upward Striking Lightning in Tempe?

3/16/2022 (Permalink)

Lightning covers the desert sky. We restore storm damage 24-hours a day in Maricopa County.

On a visit to Tempe one summer, I watched an intense thunderstorm with lightning, and I remember staying up all night watching the lightning from my hotel window. SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East responds to storm damage emergencies every year, and we want everyone to be safe around lightning. Here is some information about lightning from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:

  • Upward striking lightning is possible but extremely rare, but high-speed cameras have shown upward lightning flashes to be more common than previously thought
  • Lightning’s unpredictability increases the risk to individuals and property
  • Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as ten miles away from any rainfall
  • “Heat lightning” is lightning from a thunderstorm too far away from thunder to be heard. However, the storm may be moving in your direction.
  • Most lightning deaths and injuries occur when people are caught outdoors in the summer months during the afternoon and evening
  • Lightning strike victims carry no electrical charge and should be attended to immediately. Most people struck by lightning are not killed but are injured significantly.
  • Your chances of being struck by lightning are estimated to be 1 in 600,000 but could be reduced even further by following safety precautions

Roots are growing through a pipe. We are leaders in water damage restoration in Maricopa County.

My water bill was unusually high, and I knew it wasn’t because I was using more water. I looked around for leaking pipes and dripping faucets but couldn’t locate any visible signs of leakage. • Never pour grease down the drain
  • Plant trees away from lateral drain lines to prevent roots from damaging piping
  • If your home’s sewer system is connected to the city’s sewer system, a particular problem for older homes, or if you are located downhill or below street level, contact a plumbing professional to install a backflow prevention assembly into your sewer system
  • Call a professional if you notice signs of a plumbing problem
    • An increased monthly water bill
    • Banging pipes

Hidden Water Leak in Mitchell Park East?

12/7/2021 (Permalink)

A leaking pipe is shown. We restore water damage quickly and efficiently in Maricopa County!

Water Bill Too High in Mitchell Park East?

An unusually high water bill may be an indicator of hidden water damage. SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year, and we use advanced technology, like infrared cameras, to detect hidden water leaks behind walls. The Environmental Protection Agency offers these helpful tips for detecting water leaks in your home:

Water Leak Detection Tips

  • A good method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. It’s likely that a family of four has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • To check for a toilet bowl leak, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak.

Leaking Showerhead in McClintock Manor?

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

A dripping showerhead is shown. Maricopa County relies on us to restore water damage!

Money-Saving Tips for McClintock Manor

Have you inspected your home’s plumbing systems for water leaks lately? According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it is likely that a family of four has a water leak if their winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month. SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year, and we see how small water leaks turn into water damage over time. Here is some information and tips from the EPA for fixing a leaky showerhead:

  • A showerhead leaking at ten drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year. That’s the amount of water it takes to wash 60 loads of dishes in your dishwasher.
  • Most leaky showerheads can be fixed by ensuring a tight connection using pipe tape and a wrench. If you are replacing a showerhead, look for one that has earned the WaterSense label.
  • Fixing water leaks can save homeowners about ten percent on their water bills.

Carpets can filter and trap dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. All carpet manufacturers agree on actions you can take between carpet cleanings to increase the life span of your carpet.

The IICRC states that 79 percent of the soil in carpet is dry soil. Vacuuming is a critical component of proper care and maintenance of carpet.

Preventative maintenance actions include:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Spot removal
  • Pilating the carpet to prevent matting
  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

Thanksgiving Cooking Safety Tips for Tempe?

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

A person is checking a turkey in an oven. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Maricopa County.

Do you know that more home fires happen on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year in the United States? SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East wishes everyone in Tempe a happy Thanksgiving and offers these cooking safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

Top 10 safety tips
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot, and kids should stay three feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, or coffee could cause serious burns
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer, or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet
  • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks, or bags
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working

Water Damage Prevention Tips for McClintock Manor?

Water damage can happen at any time and for many reasons in McClintock Manor, and when it does, SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East is Here to Help. ® Here are some tips from the Insurance Information Institute to help you maintain your indoor plumbing systems:

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets. Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines, and refrigerator ice makers. Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks and replace them all every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine. Never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home. A damaged hose or a burst pipe can send water racing into your home. Being able to locate and shut off the main water supply quickly will save stress, money and time.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

A portable fire extinguisher in a home. We are trusted leaders in fire restoration in Maricopa County.

  • The room is not filled with smoke

SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East offers these fire extinguisher safety tips from the NFPA:

    • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly
    • Sweep the nozzle from side-to-side
  • Select a multi-purpose extinguisher that can be used on all types of home fires that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out

Water Damage Timeline for Riverside?

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

The face of a clock is shown. We restore water-damaged homes and businesses in Maricopa County.

Riverside residents can rely on SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East to restore water-damaged properties. No job is too big for us. When left unmitigated, water can cause serious damage. Here is a water damage timeline that describes the damage water can do over time:

Within Minutes

  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain
  • A musty odor appears

48 Hours to 1 Week:

  • Mold and mildew may grow and spread
  • Doors, windows, and studs swell and warp
  • Metal begins to rust and corrode
  • Furniture warps and shows signs of mold

Smoke Odor Removal Services for Meyer Park?

9/28/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke is billowing out of a commercial business. We restore fire-damaged businesses in Maricopa County.

SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East has been restoring fire-damaged businesses in Meyer Park for years. Here are some of the methods we may use to eliminate smoke damage:

Air Scrubber or Filter

  • An HVAC air scrubber or HEPA air purifier is useful for capturing larger smoke molecules. There will still be some residual odor from smaller molecules or surface residues.

Ozone Generator

  • An ozone generator is a fast and highly effective smoke odor restoration method. These machines emit ozone, which follows the same paths through the air as smoke and oxidizes any residual traces in the air or on surfaces.

Thermal Fogging

  • Thermal fogging is an intensive treatment involving fogging machines. After residents evacuate, smoke cleaning professionals fill a structure with petroleum distillates that neutralize odors and then ventilate the area.

Hydroxyl Generator

  • A hydroxyl generator is a slower and gentler alternative to ozone. These machines rely on ultraviolet light to generate hydroxyl radicals that eliminate smoke odors. It will take about three to five days of continuous operation to achieve the same results as a single ozone treatment.

Vapor Modification

  • Vapor modification is another odor elimination method that relies on aromatic compounds and a blower or fan to neutralize smoke odor.

Flooding in Tempe?

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

Water is shown overflowing a roadway. We respond to storm damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Maricopa County.

Flash flood warnings were in effect for parts of Maricopa County in August. SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East wants everyone to be safe in flooding situations and offer these tips from the Arizona Emergency Information Network:

  • If told to evacuate, do so immediately
  • Listen to the Emergency Alert System, NOAA Weather Radio, or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions
  • Be aware of streams, drainage channels, canyons, and other areas known to flood suddenly. Flash floods can occur in these areas with or without typical warnings, such as rain clouds or heavy rain.  Move immediately to higher ground.
  • Do not walk through moving water. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
  •  Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.
    • Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water
  •  Do not camp or park your vehicle along streams, rivers, or creeks, particularly during threatening conditions
  • If trapped in a building, then go to its highest level. Do not climb into a closed attic. You may become trapped by rising floodwater. Go on the roof only if necessary.

Home Fire Sprinklers in Riverside?

8/30/2021 (Permalink)

A fire sprinkler is shown mounted on a ceiling in a home. Home fire sprinklers save lives in Maricopa County!

Everything you wanted to know about home fire sprinklers (but were afraid to ask).

Home sprinklers are environmentally friendly. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home sprinklers reduce the amount of water run-off and pollution, reduce fire damage by up to 71 percent, and reduce water used to put out a fire by as much as 91 percent!

SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East responds to fire damage emergencies throughout the year in Riverside, and we witness firsthand the difference home fire sprinklers make in reducing fire damage. Here are some interesting facts about home fire sprinklers from the NFPA:

  • Home fire sprinklers save lives and property. In many situations, a family who has survived a fire will also have their “home” to live in and enough of the items and space in their home to continue living their lives as they did before.
  • A home fire sprinkler system can reduce the homeowner’s insurance premium
  • Cigar smoke or burnt toast will not activate a fire sprinkler. Only the high temperature of a fire will activate the sprinkler.
  • A home fire sprinkler system is easy to maintain. Just inspect your home to make sure the sprinklers are not blocked by something that would prevent the water from coming out.

Mold Infestation in Meyer Park?

8/23/2021 (Permalink)

A person is looking at mold growing by a cabinet. We are trusted leaders in mold remediation in Maricopa County!

Mold situation in Meyer Park?

Do you know what to do if you think you have mold in your house? SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East are trusted leaders in mold mitigation and remediation. When you suspect you have a mold problem, the first thing to do is hire an industrial hygienist. They will take readings of the air to determine how much mold is present in the atmosphere and tell you what type of mold you have.

The industrial hygienist will write a report describing the protocol to be followed to mitigate the mold damage. SERVPRO® of North Tempe and Mesa East will send a team to contain the mold and begin the mitigation process. We will install a containment chamber to prevent cross-contamination to other uncontaminated areas of the structure.

Antimicrobial chemicals are used to kill mold. Powerful air scrubbers are installed to clean the air in the infected area. After we complete this process, the industrial hygienist will return and retest the air and give a new report stating that the mold has been remediated.

The source of the water leak that has caused the mold will also need to be identified and repaired to ensure the mold does not return.

Here are some tips from the City of Tempe to prepare your home and streets for a flood:

Prepare Your Home

  • Trim trees so they are away from windows and roofs
  • Clear debris from your roof drainage system, including gutters and downspouts
  • Pre-treat pools with a chlorine shock to help prevent algae growth.
  • Do not apply fertilizers or other outdoor chemicals before expected storms
  • Secure loose items on your property, such as patio and pool furniture
  • Unplug expensive electronics (TV, stereo, home entertainment centers, and computers) and/or install power protection devices

Keep Storm Drains Clear of Debris

Toilet Overflow in North Tempe?

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

Troubled Toilet in North Tempe?

SERVPRO of North Tempe responds to water damage emergencies often in Tempe, and we know that the faster the damage is mitigated, the lower the degree of water damage may be. According to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) faulty supply lines, toilet flanges, fill valve assemblies, or toilet backups and overflows were attributed to 78 percent of water damage from toilets. Here are some loss prevention and maintenance tips from the IBHS:

Be patient after you flush and wait for the valve to completely finish refilling the tank and bowl.

If an overflow looks imminent, lift off the tank cover and lift the float to shut off water flow to the tank, and then turn off the supply valve.

Twice a year, inspect a toilet’s components, such as the fill, supply, flush valves, and the supply line. Make sure you can turn off the supply.

If you have older screw type valves that are hard to turn or start leaking, consider replacing them with simpler ball valves that are easy to shut off quickly.

Basement Flooded? Now What!

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Hospital Water Damage Water damage affecting a basement in a hospital

If you are standing in a flooded basement in Tempe, AZ right now, skip to the phone number below.

If not take a minute to read the information below.

Cleaning up a basement flood calls for professional experience and equipment. SERVPRO of North Tempe is the premier choice when it comes to water & mold damage restoration in Tempe, Arizona. Our team is quick to respond and handle any size water loss in the Tempe area.
It is important to extract water in a timely manner to limit damage, but pumping too quickly can damage a structure. Professional technicians take the following measures when restoring flooded basements in Tempe, AZ.

Inspect the Structure
The origin of flooding may impact the structural integrity of a basement. There are several reasons why water may accumulate on the lowest level of a home:
Broken pipe
Flood conditions
Malfunctioning appliance
Sewer backup   Regardless of the cause, the structure must remain sound. This concern may prolong the process of water extraction.  Pump Out Water  Basement cleanup specialists often use pumps to eliminate standing water and debris, but the interior and exterior pressure must remain equalized. It may take considerably longer to remove water and avoid structural damage. This is one reason why homeowners should not attempt to clean up a basement flood on their own.  Clean and Disinfect  Mitigation can proceed once water has been removed. Different measures may be necessary depending on the type of flood water:
Dry Category One damage from clean water
Disinfect Category Two damage from gray water
Disinfect Category Three damage from black water  Category One water usually comes from a pipe break. Category Two water may come from a washing machine overflow or sump pump malfunction and contains chemicals or microorganisms. Category Three water usually contains sewage. Insurance coverage for cleanup and restoration may be available depending on the cause of flooding.  Dry the Basement  Drying is the final step in the mitigation process. Experts may recommend the use of additional ventilation or a dehumidifier. Restoration cannot proceed until the affected area is completely dry.Homeowners dealing with a basement flood should rely on SERVPRO of North Tempe. Trained professionals can eliminate water as quickly as possible without causing structural damage. Our technicians are trained and certified.
Each day, SERVPRO of North Tempe will monitor the drying process to make sure your home or business is drying quickly and efficiently. If you have any questions about the water damage restoration process, give us at call any time day or night at (480) 456-0000.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips for Property Managers

5/31/2021 (Permalink)

Hospital Water Damage Hurricanes are defined by violent winds often in excess of 74 mph, these weather occurrences can cause property damage that takes months to repair.

Going through a hurricane can bring untold stress. That’s even truer if you’re managing a property. With multiple renters come multiple potential problems, any of which could carry the risk of liability. Don’t wait until the last minute. Use these hurricane preparedness tips to prepare your Tempe, AZ, property and enter storm season confident you’ll suffer little hurricane damage.

Hurricane Season Risks

A hurricane is best described as a storm on steroids. Defined by violent winds often in excess of 74 mph, these weather occurrences can cause property damage that takes months to repair. Damage can include:

  • Floodwaters moving across the ground
  • Mudslides due to excessive ground moisture
  • Tornadoes triggered by the original storm

If your property is located in a hurricane-prone area, it’s important that you prepare for these potential impacts.

Make a Water Damage Plan

If you own a multi-family property, a comprehensive storm preparation plan is a must. Make sure your strategy covers evacuation plans, emergency contacts and hurricane damage relief information. Create a hurricane-preparedness team tasked with updating and communicating your plan to residents.

Secure Your Property

During high winds, just about anything can become a projectile. It’s important to secure items in advance to prevent serious damages. Survey the property in advance of the storm to identify items like large trash bins that could be lifted in a storm. If the item can’t be secured, store it inside.

Make a Preparedness Kit

Don’t forget your staff when preparing for a hurricane. Make and store kits in portable containers that can allow your staff to tend to emergencies that may occur just before or during a storm. Be sure to include staples like a flashlight, extra batteries, drinking water and a first aid kit.

Hurricane damage is nothing to sneeze at. The flooding and high winds can be a property management nightmare. Don’t risk it. Use these tips as a starting point for hurricane preparedness and enter the storm season secure.

It's Time To Get Smart About Smoke Detectors And Protecting Your Family

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

Smart Detection Can Help Limit Fire Damage

One of the keys to protecting your family and your home from fire damage is a smoke detector. In addition to some of the newer long lasting smoke detectors, smart smoke detectors are available. The options, functions and different sensors available is a lot to sort through.

Some models offer a feature allowing you to turn off the alarm from your smart phone whether you are home or away. There are models that have a feature that will turn on some of your lighting to help you and your family get out of the fire. Some detect both smoke and carbon monoxide.

Certain smart smoke detectors can work with other smart systems in your home. The lighting is one example. When choosing a system you should consider if it will work with your current security system. Will the smart smoke detector be compatible with other smart systems already in your home.

Beyond the technology compatibility issues there is the issue of fire detection. Smoke detectors use one of two types of sensors to detect fires. Ionization-type sensors are most useful for detecting fast-burning fires.

Photoelectric sensors are better at warning about smoldering, or slower burning fires. Some smart smoke alarms are designed to pick up both types of fires.

Understanding Your Tempe Homeowner's Policy And Mold Remediation

3/31/2021 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO of North Tempe (480) 456-0000 if you have questions about mold remediation

Most homeowners do their best to ensure that mold never becomes a problem in their home. Unfortunately, some homeowners are unaware of what causes mold and how they can be proactive in preventing fungus growth. If you’re afraid that you may have mold damage in your Tempe home, you’re probably wondering if your homeowner’s insurance will cover the cost of mold remediation.

Below is some information to help you understand if your insurance may cover the damage.

Sudden and Accidental Events

While you likely don’t have a separate mold insurance policy, your insurance will cover mold cleanup costs if they are caused by sudden and accidental events such as the following:

Hurricane

Fire

Accidental water from burst pipes

Insurance companies need to know that the incident could not be prevented. A specific example of a covered peril is when a new hose behind your washing machine bursts and you’re gone on a business trip or vacation. You return home after a week and find the water and fungus growth. This is an example that shows there was no negligence on your part.

Lack of Maintenance

Now that you understand some instances that justify mold coverage, it’s helpful to know when black mold cleanup would not be covered by insurance. First, remember that an insurance company will only cover sudden and accidental perils. If you’ve noticed black mold slowly growing in your shower and after weeks or months start to worry that it may be causing health effects, your insurance will likely not cover the repair costs. Why? Because insurance companies expect homeowners to properly maintain their home. This includes properly venting bathrooms, maintaining caulking around windows and ensuring that water flows away from the home.

Fungus growth and mold can be prevented by properly maintaining your home. In the unfortunate event of sudden and accidental perils, your homeowner’s insurance will likely cover the mold remediation costs. Contact SERVPRO of North Tempe (480) 456-0000 to ensure your home is cleaned correctly.

SERVPRO of North Tempe specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business. Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Most of us don’t think about the possibility of water damage when we are away on vacation. We are more concerned about the fun we will be having with friends and family. However, nothing would be worse than coming home and finding yourself standing in a few inches of water. Here are some things to add to your holiday vacation check list.

Shut off the water valve

The easiest way to avoid damage is to turn off your water at the main valve, and we recommend doing this for both long and shorter trips. If you’re not sure where the main water valve shut off is, call your plumber. He can also test to make sure it’s working properly.

Appliances and more

If don’t want to shut off your main water valve because someone is house or pet sitting, or your sprinkler system is set to run, you should turn off the valves to your appliances like your dishwasher, ice maker, and washing machine.

Check your insurance policy, if something should happen while you’re away it’s important to double check your insurance policy. Some policies are voided if the home is unoccupied for an extended period. Some policies even have a requirement that someone must check the premises at least once a week.

Tempe Storm Damage Can Harm Your Business

3/23/2021 (Permalink)

Don't let minor storm damage turn into big problems for your commercial site call SERVPRO of North Tempe (480) 456-0000.

Tempe 24 Hour Emergency Storm Damage Service

Storm damage can devastate a business in Tempe, especially if there is little preparation done before the storm occurs. By preparing your business for storms and high winds, you can help to prevent serious damage to your business.

1. Protect Windows

When high-speed winds occur, windows often are one of the first parts of a building to become damaged. Broken windows can allow debris and water to get inside your property and make interior damage more likely. With excessive amounts of water in your business, you may need to contact water and storm damage restoration professionals. In order to decrease the likelihood of your windows breaking, it can be helpful to use storm shutters or to board up the windows with plywood.

2. Ensure Important Documents Are Safe

Recovering documents after storm damage can be difficult and time-consuming. Before a storm, it can be useful to know where your important documents are stored and to keep the documents in containers that are water-resistant. Additionally, it can be wise to keep printed copies of your documents at another location and to make digital copies in case you cannot access the printed copies.

3. Inspect the Exterior of Your Business

Prior to a storm, it’s often wise to examine the exterior of your building and to remove any hazards that could cause damage. Trees that are leaning over your building, trees that are rotted and clogged gutters can all cause damage to your property. It can be helpful to clear gutters and to trim limbs that are dead or that are hanging over your building. If a particular tree is likely to fall when wind occurs, it may be necessary to cut it down entirely.

Taking steps to prevent storm damage can help to save you the time and money of restoration. Protecting your windows, keeping documents safe and inspecting the exterior of your business can help you to prepare for a storm with high winds.

SERVPRO of North Tempe specializes in storm and flood damage restoration. Our crews are highly trained and we use specialized equipment to restore your property to its pre-storm condition. From initial and ongoing training at SERVPRO’s corporate training facility to regular IICRC-industry certification, rest assured our staff is equipped with the knowledge to restore your property.

Storm damage And Your Commercial Property

3/23/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of North Tempe Is Ready Help After The Storm

Owning or operating a business within a flood zone, which gets significant rainfall can be tricky.

Acquire Flood Insurance and Maintain the Building

Not all regular insurance policies in Tempe, include flood protection. Examine your policy to see what it covers and determine if flooding is likely enough to purchase flood damage insurance.

It is also important to assess the state of the building’s exterior and make repairs as needed. Make sure all gutters, downspouts and other drainage systems are fully functioning and clear.

Move Furniture and Equipment

If you are informed ahead of time about significant flooding, move furniture and sensitive equipment away from potential flooding areas.

Utilize Sandbags or Urethane Foam

To ensure water does not enter into the building through cracks such as around doors, you can utilize sandbags to anchor plastic sheeting onto each door. Use duct tape to keep the plastic attached to the door and wall and extend the plastic sheet to the ground in front of the door. Pile sandbags in the same pattern that bricks are laid, out past the edges of the door, in three or four layers.

Urethane spray foam can be found in many hardware stores and can be sprayed in the cracks around the bottom of each door or other openings such as low dryer vents, about two to three feet high. A putty knife can be used to remove it later. This could leave residual damage when removing it, but this would likely be less damaging than a foot of flood water sitting inside the building.

Protect Your Tempe Business

Being fully prepared for a major flood can save you a lot of headache, time and financing after a flood. If you have experienced storm damage, a flood restoration company can clean up and restore any building while installing systems that help to prevent future damage.

Storms, flooding and water emergencies don’t wait for regular business hours and neither do we.

SERVPRO of North Tempe provides emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including all holidays.

Devastating Commercial Fires In Tempe And Protecting Your Business

3/22/2021 (Permalink)

Fire damage can happen quickly in a commercial building. If you have experienced fire damage call SERVPRO of North Tempe (480) 456-0000.

Fire damage can be devastating to your commercial building. Even if the fire was contained quickly and the damage appears minimal, restoration can be costly, putting your business at risk of bankruptcy. Certain steps must be taken to ensure your business is protected from fire loss.

Assessing the Damage

When a building and all of its contents have not been completely destroyed by fire, it is considered a partial loss. This is a term used by insurance companies to determine the proper protocol for working with the client to recover their business.

Remember that a fire is dangerous for more than its flames. Smoke damage, excessive heat, and mold and water damage can all ruin the integrity of the building and the contents within, so it is imperative to ensure you understand the full extent of the damage before moving forward with restoration.

Restoring Your Business After a Fire

Once the full extent of the partial fire loss has been determined, it is time to work with a qualified fire restoration service. These specialists in Tempe have equipment designed specifically to restore walls, furniture, electronics, and other items in the business by eliminating odors and damage caused by smoke, water, and other elements.

Final Tips on Working with Your Insurance Company

After a partial fire loss, insurance companies are expected to restore your business to a uniform and consistent appearance. In other words, every effort should be made to get your business looking and feeling like it did before the fire. As such, pay close attention to your policy should disputes arise. Common challenges may include an unwillingness to pay for new flooring that matches undamaged areas, damage to outdoor landscaping, or air quality concerns. Following a few basic steps and ensuring a solid understanding of your insurance policy will help minimize the damage to your business, both physically and financially after a fire.

Humidity can ruin paperwork, electronics, and can cause mold growth in areas that were not affected by flooding.

If your home or business has a mold problem, technicians for SERVPRO of North Tempe can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

if you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne.

Flooding from a pipe burst or fire suppression system can dump gallons of water. That much water can affect multiple floors in a building which is very costly. Conventional drying methods will not dry out a large building.

Options For Unclogging Drains And Avoiding Water Damage

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

There are some smart alternatives to heavy duty drain cleaners

Taking Care Of Your Tempe Home

A clogged drain is not only a big hassle in your home, but it can also cause flooding if not handled properly. It might be tempting to buy a heavy-duty drain cleaner, but that’s usually not the best option. The chemicals that destroy clogs can also destroy pipes. So, what are some safe alternatives to these harsh chemicals?

1. Borax, Salt, and Vinegar

Mix ¼ cup of Borax, ¼ cup of salt and ½ cup of vinegar and pour the mixture into the drain. Then, pour boiling water into the drain. Give it an hour, and then rinse with water.

2. Dish Soap

Three tablespoons of liquid dish soap combined with two liters of boiling water is an easy remedy for grease clogs. The grease is returned to liquid and will then easily travel down the pipes.

3. Plunger

A plunger can often save the day when dealing with a clogged drain. A plunger is sometimes all it takes to clear a drain. Cup plungers work best on flat surfaces, such as tubs and sinks. Flange plungers are useful in toilets, tubs and sinks.

4. Coat Hanger

A wire coat hanger can be used to pull the clog out of the drain of a sink or tub. It’s especially helpful for clearing hair clogs. Straighten the hanger, and then use the hook end to extract the clog contents.

5. Snake

A toilet auger also known as a drain snake can reduce your risk of having to deal with a sewage cleanup; it’s smaller than a plunger and gets directly to the source.

Crank the handle to extend the cable into the drain. You can move the cable around until you feel that you’ve “hooked” some of the clog. Bring the end of the cable back to see if anything is attached. If not, try again or move it around to try to break up the clog. Then, try flushing the toilet. Unclogging a drain can sometimes seem impossible.

Three Things You Can Do To Protect Your Home From Water Damage

2/15/2021 (Permalink)

A sump pump in good working order could save your home from water damage.

Ways You Can Maintain Your Home's Pump
Your home's sump pump can help to prevent flooding in the basement or crawlspace of your home in Tempe. Without pump maintenance, your pump may not work effectively. Fortunately, there are various ways you can help to maintain your home's pump.

1. Visually Inspect the Pump
Inspecting your pump can allow you to notice potential issues that are often easy to fix, such as your pump being unplugged or leaks. It can be easy for your pump to become unplugged from an outlet, and an unplugged pump cannot divert water out of your crawlspace or basement. Plugging your pump back in is a simple, quick solution. An unnoticed leak can also cause water damage to your home, and in order to rectify the issue, you may find it useful to contact emergency restoration services. However, quickly noticing a leak and contacting a plumber to fix the issue can help to prevent water damage.

2. Test the Pump
Regularly testing your pump is often an important part of pump maintenance. However, many homeowners are unsure of how to test their home's sump pump. In order to see if your pump is working, you can pour a small amount of water into the sump pit. If your pump is working, water should be drained from the area; if your pump isn't working, the pump may not turn on and remove the water.

3. Invest in Backup Supplies
Pumps that use batteries should have their batteries replaced once a year, though in some cases, you may need to replace the battery to your pump more frequently. It's helpful to have a battery ready in case of an emergency.

Additionally, you might want to consider having a backup pump. During storms with heavy rain, a backup pump can be useful if there is a power outage or if your pump struggles to handle a large amount of water.

Knowing how to keep your sump pump working optimally can help to protect your home from flood damage. Inspecting the pump, performing regular tests and investing in backup supplies can help to ensure your pump can help to prevent flooding in your home.

Water Heater Rumbles Could Lead To Water Damage

2/5/2021 (Permalink)

If you have water damage SERVPRO of North Tempe is a call away (480) 456-0000

Could that rumbling sound coming from your water heater mean water damage to your home in the future? The water heater is probably not something that you give a lot of thought. When it's not-so-quiet, there are variety of causes that may be to blame for the sounds.

Here are four of the most common sounds that water heaters can make and what you should do about them.

Screeching

If your unit is screeching, the inlet control valve is likely to blame. If it closes partway, the restricted water flow that results can lead to a persistent screech. To fix it, simply open the valve.

Popping

A popping sound coming from your water heater typically indicates a buildup of sediment and minerals, particularly calcium and lime. Water gets stuck beneath the debris and releases steam with a popping sound. If left untreated, that accumulation of pressurized air can cause the unit to explode.

Fortunately, there's a relatively easy fix: a water heater flush. Flushing the unit annually can remove sediment and other debris, eliminating the popping sound and prolonging the life of the unit.

Sizzling

Sizzling often signifies a leak. The sound you're hearing is the sound of escaped water hitting the burner. The remedy in this case is almost always to promptly call a professional. Time is of the essence, as a leaking unit is wasting both hot water and energy.

Crackling

While a sizzling sound usually foretells a troublesome leak, if your unit is crackling, it's likely due to condensation on the burner. The noise may not be pleasant, but it’s normal.
With regular maintenance and inspections, you can prevent many water heater mishaps. In the event that a leak or other issue gets out of hand, enlist the help of a seasoned water damage mitigation company to return your home to normal quickly and safely.

Battling Fire Damage With Technology And Experience

If you have fire damage to your home or business call us today. Call SERVPRO of North Tempe (480) 456-0000.

If you have ever experienced smoke damage in your home you understand that it can be very difficult to fully remove the smell and get your home back to the way it was, “Like it never even happened." It often requires using advanced techniques or equipment and that means calling SERVPRO of North Tempe (480) 456-0000.

Air Filtration Devices

The first thing that can be done for smoke cleaning is to use an air filtration device to completely filter all the air in your home and make it safe to breathe again. Some filter options include:

True HEPA Filter:

High Efficiency Particulate Arresting is the highest quality air filter available and is certified to remove 99.97% of all particles down to 0.3 microns in size.

Activated Carbon Filter:

Often used along with a HEPA filter, this is most useful in removing gases, chemicals, and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Ionizer:

Using electricity, an ionizer emits negative ions which causes airborne particles to collect into the air filter or onto the floor or walls. This can reduce allergens in the air to as small as 0.1 microns.

Ozone Machines:

Ozone machines can be plugged in anywhere and release ozone into the air. The oxidation that occurs changes the chemical structure of smoke, other odors, and even bacteria, viruses, mold, and more. After a few hours, the smell is usually completely removed from the room.

Thermal Foggers:

Using this type of equipment, a deodorizer is heated and sprayed in fog form. Because of this delivery method, it is able to penetrate very small areas and is incredibly effective in eliminating even the most stubborn odors.

Individuals living in the home that have a compromised immune system, young children, and the elderly can be very sensitive to smoke.

An expert can remove the smoke odor from your home, to the degree that you’ll forget it was ever even there. Call SERVPRO of North Tempe (480) 456-0000.
